Raj Kumar’s team skills, his hands-on experience in the field has made him a favourite amongst his guests, but this is not all, Malung Treks and Expedition and Raj Kumar have worked hard to grow into a renowned travel/trekking agency.
With this new status, Raj Kumar got the resources and organization to be active in the social sector and on more occasions than one has used his standing to help the local communities. By continuing the social work of he’s father Mr. Hit Kumar Rai, and the organization Welcome Home focuses on the following points: the relocation of landslide affected communities, childcare and education, women empowerment and health and hygiene. In order to sustain Welcome Home, Malung Treks and Expedition donates 10percent of their profit to the charity organization. Raj Kumar did not start at the top and had to work hard to provide quality services to his guests and to be able to increase sustainable tourism in Nepal. A little history of how Raj Kumar Rai started.
Raj Kumar Rai was born in the Solukhumbu district in 1982, his family struggled to make ends and was forced to leave school in grade 5 due to the financial difficulties his family faced. At the age of 10, he left his hometown to work and find some form of stability. At the young age of 15 he started his career working for the tourism industry for menial jobs, he launched himself into the industry that propelled him to do better and intrigued him as well.
Soon enough due to the relentless exchanges with guests at hotels, trekking companies at the tourist hub Namche bazaar Raj Kumar was able to know the business in and out. His hands-on experience equalled an academic standing as he worked hard to move up in the ranks of his work from porter to trekking guide to now a Managing Director and although the road to his success was not an easy one he has proved that with determination and goodwill anything is possible. He is a great example of how tourism can help people in secluded communities in Nepal and change the course of their life.
A prime example of determination and goodwill Raj Kumar has not only guided tours for tourists but also helped communities to benefit from tourism. Furthermore, knowing very well the effect tourism can have on the economy of a person, household and community Raj Kumar continues to promote and support sustainable tourism. As many travellers in Nepal will discover the country depends more than 50percent on tourism alone and by providing tourism-related jobs to the local communities Raj Kumar slowly but steadily increases the development of these small but precious communities.
